Each business pitch should cover the following material, as it is relevant to that business.

All rounds of judging will be based on a combination of objective and subjective criteria to help guide community and official judges:

  • Strength of Value Proposition / Competitive Advantage
  • Clarity of Presentation
  • Market Identification / Target Market
  • Social / Environmental Impact
  • Financial Model and Team
  • Intangibles and Funding Readiness

Judges will award each pitch with a score of 1-5 in each category. Each group will have the following amount of time to pitch their idea:

  • 7 minutes to pitch
  • 5 minutes of Q&A
  • 10 minutes Feedback session (end of judging)

  • Identity
    • Name of company
    • Founder(s)
    • Slogan/motto/name of presentation
  • Value proposition
    • What is the gap in the market?
    • What is the pain that customers feel?
    • Explain your business concept and how it fills the gap in the market.
    • What is the story of why/how you created this business? Why now?
    • What do you provide that is better and different from what is currently on the market?
    • What are you adding that is unique?
  • Market Analysis
    • Who is your customer? Describe your target—demographics and spending power
    • How did you identify this need in the market?
    • How big is your target market?
    • What are they currently using/buying to satisfy their needs?
    • Who will you access your target market?
    • Why is your business important to this market?
    • Customer acquisition plan—How do you acquire customers?
    • What is your marketing strategy?
  • Competition/Competitive Advantage
    • Who is currently operating in this space?
    • How are they operating? How big are they?
    • Why are you better than the competition?
    • Do you have any expertise/IP/trade secrets that separate your business from the others?
  • Social/Environmental Impact
    • How does your business impact people’s quality of life?
    • How does your business help poeple’s health and wellness?
    • What measures are you taking to be environmentally conscious?
    • How does your business impact local community?
  • Financial Model and Team
    • Financial Model
      • How do you make money?
      • What is your profit margin?
      • What financial resources are needed to become operational/What capital do you need to take your business to the next level?
      • Talk about the history of your business in financial terms.
      • What financial milestones have you achieved?
      • What milestones do you anticipate achieving in the next calendar year?
    • Team
      • Who works with you and what is each member’s background/expertise?
      • What additional team (staff) will be required to launch? What team will be required to operate/grow?
  • Intangibles and Funding Readiness
    • Viability (can it operate long-term?)
    • Feasibility (can it get off the ground?)
    • What non-financial resources do you need to reach your goals?
      • Staff
      • Space
      • Research and development
      • Branding
      • IP (trademark, copyright, patent), legal
      • How would you apply new funding?
  • Clarity and Presentation
    • A clear vision of the product or service being offered
    • A clear vision of growth
    • Exceptional presentation skills
    • Entertaining pitch design (hook, clarity, articulation, flow, ask, passion for business)

Requirements

  • A 7-minute (maximum) pitch covering the points defined above
  • A slide deck summary of business (can be updated after submission)
    • Must be submitted with application
    • Do not have to use the slide deck in your pitch
    • No more than 15 slides
  • 90-second video explaining your business

Dates

  • Practice Pitch Sessions: TBD
  • GEN Z Online Application—Opens Sunday March 1st – March 27th (midnight)
  • Semi-Finalists will be notified via email on April 4th.
  • Semi-Finals—Tuesday, April 14th, 5:00-8:00 pm. Location TBD.
  • Winner will advance to Boulder Startup Week Competition: Monday, May 11th.
